Homo Roboticus - 30 vragen over een wereld in robotisering en artificiële intelligentie

NL – Zevenvijftig academici van de VUB nemen samen de handschoen op. De filosofen, ingenieurs, architecten, fiscalisten, juristen, economen, moraal- en communicatiewetenschappers, politicologen, … bekijken het thema mens en technologie vanuit verschillende disciplines. Samen willen zij bijdragen hoe de VUB waarden rond gelijkheid, vrijheid en verbondenheid overeind blijven in een gerobotiseerde wereld. Via 30 prikkelende vragen rond het samenleven met robots, komen ze tot concrete stellingen voor een inclusieve robotagenda.

EN – Fifty-seven academics from the VUB joined forces. Philosophers, engineers, architects, tax specialists, lawyers, economists, moral and communication scientists, political scientists, … write on the topic Man and Technology from different disciplines. Together they aim to contribute to how the VUB values on equality, freedom and solidarity stand ground in a robotized world. Through 30 thought-provoking questions the book puts forward concrete propositions for an inclusive robot agenda.

EVENTS

Brussels, Belgium – 7 February 2019

NL – Op 7 februari 2019, lanceerde de Vrije Universiteit Brussel Homo Roboticus in samenwerking met De Munt. Het programma bestond uit wervelende dansvoorstellingen, boeiende presentaties, artistieke interventies en demonstraties. Kunst en wetenschap ontstaan allebei vanuit creatief en kritisch denken. Allebei willen ze de wereld zoals die is begrijpen, de wereld zoals die kan zijn helpen maken. Kunstenaars en academici doorlopen een gelijkaardig proces, weliswaar vanuit radicaal verschillende referentiekaders. Juist daarom werkten de Munt en de VUB intensief samen om Homo Roboticus tot leven te brengen, een event waar robots en mens het podium met elkaar deelden. We sloten de avond af met de opera Fausto van Luc Steels.

EN – On 7 February, the Vrije Universiteit Brussels launched Homo Roboticus in cooperation with the opera house La Monnaie in Brussels. The evening at La Monnaie was filled with demonstrations, artistic interventions and academic talks. Art and science both arise from creative and critical thinking. They both want to understand the world as it is as well as contribute to the development and creation of our future. Artists and academics go through a similar process, albeit from radically different frames of reference. This is precisely why La Monnaie and the VUB collaborated more intensively and brought Homo Roboticus to life, an event where robots and people shared the stage. The Opera Fausto by Luc Steels on artificial intelligence closed the evening. Artists and academics from all over the world turned the event into an unforgettable kick-off.

Paris, France – 4 June 2019

NL – De Ambassade van België, de Algemene Vertegenwoordiging van de Vlaamse Regering, organiseerde Homo Roboticus in Parijs. In een meer intieme setting werden nieuwe ontwikkelingen en onderwerpen rond robotica en kunstmatige intelligentie besproken, samen met het internationale netwerk en partners in Parijs, waaronder UNESCO, OESO, Franse universiteiten en Le Crazy Horse.

EN – The Embassy of Belgium, General Representation of the Government of Flanders welcomed Homo Roboticus in Paris. In a more intimate setting we addressed new developments and topics surrounding robotics and artificial intelligence together with the international network and partners in Paris including UNESCO, OECD, French universities and Le Crazy Horse.

NL – Meer dan 50 VUB-experten uit allerlei disciplines schreven hun visie neer in het Homo Roboticus boek. Verder waren we als Homo Roboticus Team ook heel nieuwsgierig hoe de publieke opinie in België denkt over de maatschappelijke rol van robots. Daarom organiseerden we een online bevraging die een representatief actueel beeld geeft. We bouwden verder op de bevragingen die Eurostat in het verleden al organiseerde, zodat er ook gekeken kon worden naar evoluties over de jaren heen. Welke taken zijn geschikts voor robots, zijn we bang, hoe staan we ten opzichte van privacy-uitdagingen, …. Diverse topics uit het boek werden voorgelegd in de bevraging. De resultaten werden januari 2019 bekendgemaakt via KNACK en VRT.

EN – More than 50 VUB experts from various disciplines shared their vision in the Homo Robotics book. The Homo Roboticus Team was also very curious about how the public opinion in Belgium thinks about the social role of robots. That is why our team organized an online survey to give a representative, up-to-date picture. We continued to build on the queries that Eurostat already organized in the past, in order to look at the evolution over the past years. Which tasks are suitable for robots, are we afraid, how do we position ourselves vis-à-vis privacy challenges, ….? Various topics from the book were presented in the survey. The results were published via KNACK and VRT, the end of January 2019.

Activiteiten - Activities

NL – In het verlengde van het project zullen ook events voor scholieren alsook culturele en levensbeschouwelijke organisaties worden georganiseerd rond mens en robot, om het publiek warm te maken voor de technologie en voor de maatschappelijke uitdagingen die met de technologie gepaard gaan.

EN – In the continuation of the project, events for students as well as cultural and philosophical organizations will be organized, to make the public enthusiastic and aware about the technology and the social challenges associated with technology.

Platform

NL – Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat het menselijke aspect van de technologische (r)evolutie de komende decennia tot heel wat discussies aanleiding zal geven en belangrijke wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke uitdagingen zal vormen. Via het nieuwe Homo Roboticus platform zullen universiteiten, het bedrijfsleven en de overheid samen naar oplossingen zoeken voor huidige en komende uitdagingen. Met dit platform beogen wij van Brussel het internationale centrum te maken rond humanisering in de technologie.

EN – We are convinced that the human aspect of technological (r)evolution will give rise to many discussions in the coming decades and will represent major scientific and societal challenges. The new Homo Roboticus platform will bring together universities, industry and government to find joint solutions to current and upcoming challenges. With this platform, we want to make Brussels the international center for humanization in technology.

Moeten we bang zijn voor robots?
Als het kunstmatige intelligentie heeft, heeft een robot een creatieve geest?
Komt er een paarse zak voor robotafval?

In een steeds meer gerobotiseerde samenleving verkennen en bespelen u en ik nieuwe technologieën. Hoewel robotica en artificiële intelligentie mens en natuur kunnen helpen, genereren zij ook vaak angst, omdat het dreigt ons te overmeesteren. De geschiedenis leert ons dat technologie de kracht heeft om economische groei te versterken en maatschappijen te transformeren. Dit zal met de opkomende robotica en artificiële intelligentie meer dan ooit het geval zijn. De toepassingen zijn alomtegenwoordig: van robots in de fabrieken, het ombouwen van mensen tot cyborgs, zelfrijdende voertuigen tot killerbots.

Mens en robot zullen met elkaar moeten samenleven, en dit doet heel wat technische, maatschappelijke en ethische vragen rijzen. Hoe willen wij als mens in de toekomst leven? Het zijn net deze aspecten die Homo Roboticus onder de aandacht wil brengen via een boekpublicatie, verschillende activiteiten in Brussel en Vlaanderen en een publieke bevraging.

Will there be a purple bag for robotic waste?

In an increasingly robotized society, you and I explore and discover new technologies. Although robotics and artificial intelligence can help humans and nature, they also often generate fear, because they threaten to overpower us. History teaches us that technology has the power to strengthen economic growth and transform societies. This will be more than ever the case with the emerging robotics and artificial intelligence. The applications are ubiquitous: from robots in the factories, the conversion of people to cyborgs, self-driving vehicles to killerbots.

People and robots will have to live together, and this raises technical, social and ethical questions. How do we want to live as humans in the future? Homo Roboticus wants to bring these aspects to your attention through a book publication, an event and citizen science project.

  • An Jacobs

    NL – An Jacobs is sinds 2005 verbonden aan de vakgroep Communicatiewetenschappen. Binnen het onderzoekscentrum imec-smit is ze verantwoordelijk voor de projecten in de gezondheidszorg. Haar wetenschappelijk onderzoek richt zich vooral op de ontwikkeling van innovatieve toepassingen in de gezondheidszorg. Hierbij staan thema’s van user empowerment in context aware omgevingen centraal.

    EN – An Jacobs has been associated with the Department of Communication Sciences since 2005. She is responsible for projects in the healthcare sector within the imec-smit research center. Her research focuses primarily on the development of innovative applications in health care. Here, themes of user empowerment in context-aware environments are central.

  • Michel Maus

    NL – Michel Maus (°1970) is professor fiscaal recht aan de VUB. Vanuit de wetenschap dat belastingen alomtegenwoordig zijn, ijvert Michel sinds jaar en dag voor een rechtvaardige fiscaliteit, waarbij belastingontwijking en belastingontduiking tot de core-business van zijn onderzoek behoren. Michel heeft ook een bijzondere interesse voor de veranderende samenleving en voor de impact van socio-economische evoluties op het fiscaal stelsel.

    EN – Michel Maus (°1970) is a tax lawyer at the VUB. Knowing that taxes are ubiquitous, Michel has been working for a fair tax system for years, tax evasion and tax evasion being the core business of his research. Michel also has a special interest in the changing society and the impact of socio-economic evolutions on the tax system.

  • Romain Meeusen

    NL – Prof. Dr. Romain Meeusen (°1958) is Vicerector internationalisering en hoofd van het departement Humane Fysiologie aan de VUB. Zijn onderzoeksinteresse is gericht op ‘Exercise and the Brain in Health & Disease’ en onderzoekt de invloed van neurotransmitters op menselijke prestaties, training.

    EN – Prof. Dr. Romain Meeusen (°1958) is Vice Rector Internationalization and head of the department of Human Physiology at the VUB. His research interest is focussed on ‘Exercise and the Brain in Health & Disease’ exploring the influence of neurotransmitters on human performance, training.

  • Lynn Tytgat

    NL – Lynn Tytgat (°1984) is de coördinator van weKONEKT.brussels, een initiatief waarbij de VUB en ULB hun verantwoordelijkheid opnemen voor de stad en de gemeenschap, en bijdragen aan de uitbouw van een vrije, verbonden, veerkrachtige en inclusieve stedelijke gemeenschap. In dit kader werkt Lynn nauw samen met de hoog aangeschreven kunstscene in Brussel om zo de synergiën tussen wetenschap, technologie en kunst te versterken.

    EN – Lynn Tytgat (°1984) is the coordinator of weKONEKT.brussels, an initiative in which the VUB and ULB take up their responsibility for the city of Brussels as well as the community. Through weKONEKT.brussels the universities want to contribute to the development of a free, connected, resilient and inclusive urban community. In this context Lynn works closely with the highly regarded art scene in Brussels in order to strengthen the synergies between science, technology and art.

  • Bram Vanderborght

    NL – Bram Vanderborght (°1980) is prof robotica verbonden aan de Brussels Human Robotic research center (www.BruBotics.eu) van de VUB. Hij denkt dat robots binnenkort even alomtegenwoordig zullen zijn als computers. De verouderende bevolking en stijgende noden in de zorgsector zijn maatschappelijke uitdagingen. Hiervoor ontwikkelt hij op de VUB een nieuwe generatie robots waar mens en robot gaan samenwerken als exoskeletons, prothesen en sociale robots.

    EN – Bram Vanderborght (°1980) is professor robotics at the Brussels Human Robotic Research Center (www.BruBotics.eu) of the VUB. He thinks that robots will soon be as ubiquitous as computers. The aging population and rising needs in the healthcare sector are societal challenges. For this, he is developing a new generation of robots at the VUB where people and robots will work together as exoskeletons, prostheses and social robots.

Denktank Poincaré

NL – De wereld verandert in een intens tempo. Dat levert een heel wat vragen op. Om op deze vragen te anticiperen bracht Rector van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Professor Caroline Pauwels een groep onderzoekers samen vanuit alle domeinen, expertises en leeftijden. De Poincaré Denktank. Voortaan zouden multidisciplinaire teams oplossingen zoeken voor een samenlevingsvraagstuk vanuit de humanistische waarden van de VUB: de principes van vrijheid, gelijkheid en verbondenheid.

Poincaré gaf intussen vorm aan twee projectgroepen. Eén met als uitgangspunt de zoektocht naar de betekenis van een humane stad. De andere met als uitgangspunt de maatschappelijke gevolgen van robotisering.

EN – The world is changing at an intense pace. That raises a lot of questions. To anticipate these questions Professor Caroline Pauwels, Rector of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, brought together a group of researchers from all disciplines, expertise and ages. The Poincaré Think Tank. From now on, multidisciplinary teams work on finding solutions to societal issues, based on the humanist values ​​of the VUB: the principles of freedom, equality and solidarity.

Meanwhile Poincaré gave shape to two projects. The first, based on the human city. The second, on the social consequences of robotization.
